Innovative Shoreline Management Solutions

SSS Inc
Seament Shorelines Picture

Waterfront shorelines around the world are seriously eroded by tides, storms, floods, wind, and ice. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, more than 45,000 acres of waterfront property has been lost over the last century in the Chesapeake Bay, an area equal to the size of the District of Columbia. The bay region continues to lose one to three feet of shoreline each year. Throughout the U.S., ocean and river shorelines continue to erode at similar rates with staggering economic losses. Places in Louisiana have reported losses in excess of 50 feet per year.

Seament Shoreline Systems uses precast concrete components for site specific solutions to preserving, utilizing, and beautifying waterfront properties. They can prevent erosion, provide better access from the land to the water, and create an attractive, stabilized, accreted beach. The concrete components don't require harmful chemicals to extend their useful life.

Seament Shoreline Systems components are:

  • Fully engineered
  • Long lasting
  • Non-toxic
  • Re-locatable
  • Cost Effective
  • Patented

Stratford Harbor
Homeowners in Westmoreland Co. VA asked SSS Inc. to help solve an erosion problem they were having along the Potomac River. The area had a high cliff on the river with no beach at allowed the continuing landslides to fall in the water and be washed away. Having read a USGS study (02-332) on Calvert Cliffs, MD with a similar situation we determined that a series of breakwaters placed offshore to build up a beach was the cheapest solution for the homeowners. White Sands Harbor Propert Owners Assoc.
This 2005 breakwater and beach nourishment project in Northumberland Co. VA was at the mouth of the Potomac. The area is just south of point Lookout and has a 33 mile fetch to the NE and a 27 mile fetch to the NW. The Association beach had seen severe erosion over the years as 3 wooden groin projects successively failed. They decided to try a breakwater project as a last ditch effort to save the beach before the river broke though to a brackish water pond behind the beach.
