Bulkheads
Seament Shoreline Systems makes a patented large pre-cast concrete bulkhead for use in high erosion areas. We have installed over a mile of our “L” Wall bulkheads since 1995. All of the installations survived the pounding of Hurricane Isabel and other storms with no damage. The walls are so successful because they are massive pieces, 4 tons each, which are interconnected with their neighbor to form a large integrated mass that even hurricane waves have not moved.

The patented design includes a 5’6” wall above grade, a 1’ 10” key below grade, a splash plate in front of the wall to reduce scour, and a 4’ back shelf buried into the hillside to keep the wall upright. In wooden or vinyl walls this is usually done with buried “deadman” or poles that are attached to the wall with wire or bolts and invariably fail causing the wall to lean out. Our patented wall incorporates this function into the design, and is certified by a Civil Professional Engineer to withstand a graded slope of 2:1 behind the wall. |

The walls are made of DOT bridge grade concrete, minimum 5000 psi concrete; with fiber and steel rebar reinforcement. Return walls are also possible using right and left corner “L” walls and to make openings for boat ramp or streams. An angled wall with a 7º cut allows the wall to make bends around the contours of the bank. |

All bulkheads stop the erosion of the cliff behind it and as this is the major supply of sand to the beach in front a groin or breakwater system should also be installed to protect the existing beach from washing way. |
